The mission of The Listening Centre (TLC), now in its 27th year, is to provide affordable, high-quality counselling and support mainly in those areas of Oxford with the greatest social deprivation such as Rose Hill and its surroundings. The area is identified in the 2015 Index of Multiple Deprivation as among the 20% of most deprived areas in England and is reported as having a high prevalence of registered depression (in a 2013 Community Mapping report by Oxfordshire MIND). Thanks to our generous benefactors the charity is still here for those in Oxfordshire who need it most and can afford it least.

TLC is a unique charity in many ways. For example, we do not run a central office but operate as a virtual organisation. This has been successful for many years, with day-to-day communications being done by email, phone or Zoom. We also encourage a horizontal and mutual support structure, with all stakeholders – practitioners, supervisors, trustees and administrators – working together to create and maintain a high quality of up-to-date policy and practice.

We are funded entirely by donations, grants and client fees.

Volunteer Fundraiser / Bid Writer

We are seeking a volunteer Fundraiser and/or Bid Writer to support our work, which makes a huge difference to many people living in and around Oxford. You can carry out the role wherever you are based.

In this role you will liaise and work with the fundraising trustee. Depending on your skills and interests there are various ways in which you could play a part, such as:

  • Helping to prepare grant applications
  • Identifying and approaching potential sponsors
  • Identifying how we can improve our fundraising
  • Designing/writing fundraising communications
  • Developing links with local organisations
  • Taking part in fundraising opportunities

Although the role is best suited to those with fundraising experience, related skills and experience will be considered. Good teamwork and communication skills are essential. The role offers opportunities to develop your fundraising skills, meet new people in the charity and counselling community, and obtain insights into the running of a successful local charity.


Ideally you would be able to devote 8-16 hours a month to fundraising, but we may consider someone who can work fewer hours. In addition, you would be invited to attend the following meetings:

  • Community meetings on a Saturday morning (three times a year)
  • An Away Day in March (once a year)


This is a voluntary role, but all reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
